| Palace on Wheels | In the 19th century, sumptuous and abundant trains were built to accommodate the transportation needs of the Indian royal family members and the British rulers. Nowadays if you are not a Maharaja or a Viceroy, you can enjoy the same level of luxury for your Indian rest.
Indian Railways has its Palace on Wheels, which will take you through vivid and lively Rajasthan, providing a unique way to see the spectacular architecture, vigorous bazaars, desert camels and exciting people of this mesmerizing region.
All the majestic trimmings of the past, such as wood-paneled interiors, gold and brass fixtures, girandoles, full-sized baths and superior linens will make you feel as you are in fact staying in a palace on wheels. 13 original luxury saloons are located in the steam locomotive, which were built for the Maharajas and Viceroys of India, each manned by its own assistant who provided personalized service.
Besides the lavishness of your suite, there are two restaurant coaches that serve five-star European and Indian cuisine and a special observation lounge that can serve as a library and bar. The Palace calls at the cities of Jaipur, Chittaurgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bharatpur, Fatehpur Sikri and, of course, Agra, the royal city of the Taj Mahal. This seven-day journey begins in Delhi with travel done mostly at night. The price includes all fine meals, excursions and transfers and starts at about $600 per day (a four-night minimum is required) depending on the season.
