Mount Kilimanjaro Safari Mount Kilimanjaro stands in picturesque dignity overlooking the vast Savannahs of East Africa. This famed mountain and the great plains that surround it have become the symbol of an East African Safari. The gentle slopes of Kilimanjaro give an occasion for the inexperienced to climb. Africa's highest mountain (rising 19,340 feet out of the Masai Steppe), the highest free-standing mountain in the world and as high a major peak as an typical trekker can go, it is also one of the Seven Summits, the seven highest points on each continent in the world. Mount Kilimanjaro has 3 peaks: Mawenzi at 16,893 feet, Shira Peak at 12,999 feet, and Kibo (Uhuru) at 19,341 feet. The Chagga people have resided near the Mountain for centuries but were not responsible for naming Kilimanjaro; the Swahili of the coast were. The name "Kilimanjaro" was created from the Kiswahili words "Mlima" (single hill) and "Ngara" (shine), because the Mountain was snow capped and reflected light when the sun was shone. Also, despite this naming convention is habitually approved upon in East Africa, other communities like the Kikuyu and Maasai have their interpretations of what the name means.
